Like Apples and Oranges

One of the things that will be most liberating about this experience is that I won’t have anybody to compare myself to.  Sure, I’ll be paired with a really wonderful teaching artist in the classroom, but we’re at such different places in our lives that I can’t let my relative inexperience with this sort of teaching get me down on myself. I have an unhealthy habit of comparing myself to my peers*, so it’s going to be nice just focusing on what I’m doing without trying to measure up to some intangible yardstick.

*Speaking of peers, you know Evan Lysacek, mens figure skater who will be competing for Olympic gold in Vancouver? We used to train at the same rink when I was a tween and now he’s competing in his second Olympics.  I will try to refrain from comparing myself to him, seeing as how he’s a World Champion and I’m taking ice dancing lessons at the park district with a bunch of teenagers.
